꿈이 이루어지는 곳
나는 김일성주석탄생100돌을 맞아 진행되는 행사와 컨퍼런스에 4월 9일부터 17일까지 초청받았다. 우리는 평양에서의 마지막날 밤 코리아사람과 외국인 모두 김일성광장에서 오케스트라, 노래와 함께하는 무도회에 초대됐다.
이 무도회가 어떻게 진행될지 어느 누구도 상상조차 할 수 없었지만 나는 아주 어렸을 때부터, 말하자면 걷기 시작할 때부터 춤추는 것만큼 신나는 일이 없다는 걸 알았다. 나는 언제나 춤을 배우고 싶었지만 비사회주의국가에서는 무상교육이 이뤄진다 해도 춤은 노래나 악기연주와 마찬가지로 우선순위가 아니었다. 우리는 주로 단순한 스포츠만 배울 수 있었고 모든 학생들은 일반적으로 같은 악기를 배웠다. 춤이나 좀 더 세련된 악기를 배우고 싶은 학생들은 학교 밖에서 돈을 주고 사교육을 받아야했다.
그래서 춤출 줄 모르는 나는 김일성광장에서 어떤 젊은 남자가 춤을 추자고 했을 때 잠시 머뭇거렸다. 하지만 나는 한 동지가 내게 춤꾼의 느낌이 난다고 했던 말을 기억해냈고 앞으로 나아갔다. 내게 춤을 신청한 젊고 정중한 신사는 인내심있게 스텝을 알려줬고 여러가지 코리아춤을 추는 내내 나를 이끌어줬다. 우리는 다른 수천명의 사람들과 함께 감미로운 음악과 노래에 맞춰 붉은기와 폭죽불꽃 아래서 춤을 췄다. 색색깔의 옷을 입은 무용수들이 열정적으로 이 야외무도장을 누비고 다녔다. 무도장에는 다정하면서도 명랑하고 즐거운 축제분위기가 넘쳐흘렀다.
사실 북코리아에서는 모든 사람들이 춤과 노래, 악기연주를 배운다. 이런 문화에 대한 권리는 헌법에 기본권으로 명시돼 있어서 국가는 모든 학생들을 무료로 공부시키며 대학과 전문학교 학생들에게는 장학금을 준다.(제3장 문화 47조) 또 국가는 민족적 형식에 사회주의적 내용을 담은 주체적이며 혁명적인 문학예술을 발전시킨다. 국가는 창작가, 예술인들이 사상예술성이 높은 작품을 많이 창작하며 광범한 대중이 문예활동에 널리 참가하도록 한다.(52조). 또한 국가는 정신적으로, 육체적으로 끊임없이 발전하려는 사람들의 요구에 맞게 현대적인 문화시설들을 충분히 갖추어주어 모든 근로자들이 사회주의문화정서생활을 마음껏 누리도록 한다.(53조).
정말로 북코리아에는 사람들이 재능을 꽃피울 수 있게 장려하고 이를 달성하게 하는 평양학생소년궁전과 인민대학습당같은 수많은 시설들이 있다. 비사회주의세계에서 문화는 중요한 역할을 차지하지 않으므로 문화생활 수단과 가능성이 능력이 있는 사회소수층에만 한정돼 있다. 또 학교는 일반적인 지식과 학습, 선택에만 스스로를 한정시킨다. 사실 이날 참가했던 모든 외국인들은 자국에는 이런 환경에서 춤추고 축제에 참가할 기회가 없음을 확실히 느꼈다. 또 코리아 사람들과 함께 탄생100돌을 축하하기 위해 참가한 이날처럼 다같이 춤을 추는 축제에 대해 들어본 적도 없었다. 소녀시절의 오랜 꿈을 이뤄준 평양에서의 그 특별한 밤은 언제나 내 마음 속에 남아있을 것이다.

The place where dreams come true
From 9th to 17th I was invited to participate at the ceremonies and conferences organised for the occasion of the centenary birth of President Kim Il Sung. For our last night in Pyongyang we, Korean and foreigners, were invited to dance at Kim Il Sung square with orchestra and songs.
Although we could hardly imagine how this could be possible, I found the idea of dancing exciting for at since I was very young and more precisely since I started walking, I always wanted to learn dancing but at school learning dance, just like singing or playing a musical instrument, is not a priority in a non-socialist country, even if education can be free; we just practice a sport, generally all children learn the same instrument and if someone wants to learn dancing or playing a more sophisticate instrument, needs to pay private lessons outside school.
So that night at Kim Il Sung square, when a young man, invited me to dance I hesitated for a moment because I cannot dance, suddenly I remembered a comrade’s words saying that I have a dancers’ style I went ahead. The young attentive gentleman with a lot of patience showed me the steps and guided me during all Korean dances we had to execute together with other thousands of people among red flags and fireworks following the soft and melodious music and songs. At this outdoor dance floor colourful dancers were moving all around dynamically in a friendly, cheerful and festive spirit atmosphere.
Actually, in DPRK everybody learns to dance, sing and play a musical instrument and this fundamental right to culture is written in the Constitution which implies not only that the State shall provide education to all pupils and students free of charge and grant allowances to students at universities and colleges (art. 47) but also State should develop art and literature and encourage workers and artists to produce works and enlist the broad sections of the masses in literary and artistic activities (art;52). Moreover, the state shall provide sufficient modern cultural facilities to meet the demands of the people who want to continually improve themselves, both mentally and physically, so that the working people enjoy a full socialist cultured, aesthetic life (art.53).
Indeed, there are plenty of places and facilities to accomplish and encourage people to blossom, for example, Children’s palace and Grand People’s study house. In a non-socialist world, culture does not play an important role, thus initiatives and possibilities of access are limited to a small part of the society, those who pay, and the school limits itself to general knowledge and study and opts out. Actually, all the foreigners who were there confirmed that in their countries such an opportunity to dance and party in such conditions and circumstances do not exist and they have never heard the existence of a mass dance like the one we were participating to celebrate the centenary birth with Korean people. That unique night in Pyongyang will remain always in my mind for I had fulfilled a long-time girl’s dream.
